Supervision

Dietitians have adopted a practice that has long been a part of the therapist world — supervision. Essentially, supervision is a formalized, professional arrangement where dietitians meet (either one-on-one, or in a group) with someone more experienced to talk through their work with clients. I find that in a field where a majority of the work is done on a private, individual level, this macro-level supervision is an essential part of professional growth so that we can better serve our client population!

The goals of supervision are simple. The supervisor can help the dietitian take an honest, objective look at their work and facilitate growth. Problems can be discussed, feelings can be validated, and solutions can be formed. In many ways, it’s not too different from the dietitian’s relationship with their own client. The end result is reflection, growth, and a greater understanding of how one thinks about problems. While “supervision” is never the word I would use to describe the work between dietitian and client, I do think there are some parallels in the process and outcomes.

It’s an extremely affirming experience to find someone who can listen to you objectively, and help pose questions that you may not have thought to ask yourself. My goal is for all of those who work with me to find these benefits, too.
