Good Food Things Part 1

Good Food Things, a list started by Ruby Tandoh (of The Great British Bake Off, back in the day!) is just an ordinary rattling off of tiny, specific details about food that are unquestionably….well, good. She recently wrote about Good Food Things in times of coronavirus fears and isolation, and how the little things about food that can bring us so much joy are worth celebrating and noting (particularly in this stressful, generally unhappy time).

I think making a Good Food Things list could be a fun way to think about what you enjoy about foods. Rather than automatically categorizing foods as good versus bad, healthy versus sinful, can we think about what we find really satisfying, pleasing, and delicious about the experience of eating or drinking something? Just for the fun of it!

Here’s a few from my past few days of eating:

  1. The initial, magical swirl of milk in my cold brew. I love the way it slowly turns my cold brew from a black color to caramel, from the bottom up, like watching reverse tie-dye. 🙂
  2. I may be the only person in the world who does this, but I like it when a big piece of lettuce is too big for the cheeseburger bun. It just hangs out of the bun, unapologetically. I nibble it down until it matches the size of the rest, and find it to be a crunchy and refreshing first bite. This happened last weekend when we got Shake Shack takeout!
  3. Nothing beats a crispy dumpling skin. It’s the perfect contrast to a juicy filling (I’m noticing I like texture contrasts, I think!).

I’m naming this “Part 1”, because I think I’ll want to do this again!
